On Friday February 23, Cedar View 5th graders attended the yearly performance put on by the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra (GRSO). The students were in awe of the size and the beauty of the DeVos performance hall while the musicians warmed before the performance. The GRSO performed selections by Bach, Beethoven, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Korsakov’s piece was “Scherezade” which is a ballet depicting the story of Scherezade and her tales lasting 1001 nights. Without the aid of the ballet, the students provided the visual representation for the piece. Students from every school which attended the concert illustrated scenes from the stories and some were selected to be displayed on the big screen during the performance. The last number the GRSO performs is always a March by John Phillip Sousa. This year was a special treat for Cedar View students as one of our own, Scarlett Newell, was chosen to conduct the final piece! The entire trip is a fantastic experience for the students and one they surely will not forget.
